Novel Creature

Hey y'all!

I'm Marissa Barrett, accessories maker, social entrepreneur, counselor, and Nashville native. I design bags and bandanas for wild women and help women reconnect to the outdoors through retreats and meet-ups.

Forgiveness and second chances are important to me. I don't believe that our past defines us. That's why a portion of profits supports mental health counseling in Nashville.

It's my goal to empower women to find rest, healing, community, and self reliance through both traditional forms of therapy and connection to the outdoors.

Nashville's my home town. After graduating college in California, I had to come back- I love it here! Nashville is such a beautiful place, where heritage meets creativity and people come together to inspire and serve one another.

Hallelujah, every breath is a second chance.

Ethically made.

I've studied apparel construction and have a BA in Psychology and an M.Ed in Counseling. Like you, I care about how the goods I buy were made and about who made them. When you support Novel Creature, you can make a difference knowing that your goods were made ethically and that your purchase supports a greater cause.

Community focused.

Since starting online in 2011, Novel Creature has been sold in 5 stores in Tennessee and featured in Southern Living, Nashville Lifestyles, and on the Nashville Mom Blog. I've participated in several festivals and craft shows including Porter Flea, Made Market, Nashvember, and the Good Makers Market..

On my days off you can find me with my husband Chris and dog Tobias at our local nature and wildlife reserve, Radnor Lake, after we shop at the farmer's market or at the Crag, our local climbing gym.  I'm a big fan of Americana music (especially Chris's band Bearheart), but in the car and my studio can frequently be caught blasting Beyonce. I walked down the aisle to an acoustic version of Halo!
